Ahhh, waxing. The classic example of “beauty is pain.” We’re waxing stans at Ero Edge, but we know it can be a bit daunting. We will say, however, it’s totally worth it. Waxing removes your hair at the root, rather than just shaving off the portion that’s above the skin. As a result, you’ll have 2-6 weeks of smoothness, rather than just a few days! Keep in mind, the length of time you’ll need to go between waxes depends on your hair type and thickness.

There are definitely some do’s and don’ts when it comes to waxing. If prepped or executed incorrectly, it can lead to results that are less than fun to deal with. If done correctly, however, you’ll be blessed with silky smooth skin!

Let’s start with the do’s

Do prep your skin properly. A day or two in advance of your wax you want to exfoliate your skin. Gently exfoliate the area you’re getting waxed in order to remove all of the dead skin and loosen any existing ingrown hairs. Make sure you’re gentle, because too harsh of an exfoliation could irritate your skin, which is the last thing you want before a wax! Going into the session, make sure that your skin is clean, but dry. This allows the wax to have the best hold on your hair, and avoids dirt and bacteria from getting in the way.

Do let your hair grow out beforehand. In order to get a clean wax, it’s best to let your hair grow a bit beforehand. This ensures that the wax gets a firm hold on your hair, and thus can effectively rip it out. Standard required length is a quarter of an inch, so give yourself at least a few days without shaving leading up to your appointment. With that being said, hair that is too long can be extremely painful to remove, so try to keep it around that ¼ inch mark, and trim it down if necessary.

Do invest in some aftercare. Immediately after your wax you should apply some sort of aftercare product – you want something that will soothe the skin and fight bacteria, such as tea tree oil. The day after your wax, you should gently exfoliate the area again to avoid any ingrown hairs forming. Moisturize the area to keep it as smooth and hydrated as possible!

Do schedule waxing appointments regularly. If you wax regularly, your hair will begin to grow back more slowly, and will begin to thin out, reducing the pain of your waxing experience. Like many beauty regimens, waxing requires upkeep and consistency.

And the don’ts?

Don’t overdo it afterwards. For about 24 hours after your wax, your hair follicles are open and sensitive. Things such as sweat, chemicals, and physical touch can irritate the area and lead to ingrown hairs, which is not fun. Avoid working out, tanning, saunas, swimming, and touching the area for a full day after your wax. This will ensure an easy recovery and smooth sailing until your next appointment!

Don’t use products with perfumes. We mentioned that moisturizing afterwards is important, but it’s also important to avoid products with perfumes and chemicals. Just like sweat, overly-perfumed products are likely to cause the area to flare up, and can cause ingrown hairs. When in doubt, go all-natural.

Don’t get a wax “down there” when you’re on your period. Sorry ladies, but there are some times of the month that aren’t ideal for brazilian waxes. While this isn’t a hard and fast rule, it’s generally better to avoid the times when you’re on your period for getting a brazilian wax. At the very least, make sure you are not wearing a pad – opt for a tampon or a cup, and out of courtesy for your technician, make sure it’s clean down there. Also keep in mind that you may be more sensitive during that period of time, so your wax may hurt more than usual.

If you follow these guidelines, waxing is such a blessing! It alleviates the time you spend shaving every day, and is much lower-maintenance. If you’re ready to jump in, you can book an appointment with us (finish linking)
