Okay, nobody panic, but it’s finally fall!! If you couldn’t already tell by the pumpkin themed everything and the Instagram feeds full of autumnal vibes and “It’s fall, y’all” captions, let us break the news: the seasons hath officially changed. And just in time, too, because we were just barely starting to get tired of our summer style. Right on cue, the new season has ushered in a slew of new fashion faves, foodie trends, and our personal obsession: makeup looks.

Each season we do a roundup of our favorite makeup trends, and we think fall might be our most iconic season yet. There’s simply no other time of year when it’s quite as fun to match your makeup tones to the colors of the nature that surrounds you. For some of our favorite new beauty trends, read on.

Darker colors. We’ll start with the obvious here – all of the shades tend to get darker and earthier in the fall. This year, we’re seeing a lot of warm brown and orange shades. Summer was the season of bronzy glow, and now, those bronze shades are getting a little darker and a little more matte. This is seen most commonly in eyeshadow looks, but rings true for blush shades, contour shades, and (of course) lip shades as well.

Black eyeliner in the waterline. Now this. THIS is a realll find. It seems that tightlining your eyes with black eyeliner has risen from its 2000s style grave and is coming back to haunt us. And yet, somehow, the beauty gurus of today somehow make it look chic and easy going. We’ll need about 20 tutorials on this one before we master the art of black eyeliner moderation, but nonetheless it’s exciting to see old makeup trends coming back again.

Soft brown smoky eyes. The sleek fox-eye look was amazing for the summer, but it’s time to break out your blending brushes because the smokey eye is taking over for the fall. Softer, more blended eyeshadow silhouettes are coming back into style, particularly with varying shades of soft brown. We love a good smoky eye – it makes you look chic, like you put optimal effort into your eyeshadow look, but you could easily throw some shadow in your crease and blend it out in 30 seconds or less. Made a mistake? Blend some more.

Eyeliner as lid designs. This trend is pretty unique, and boy does it require a steady hand. We’ve been seeing many a beauty guru use colored eyeliner as a pop of color, and this fall they seem to be kicking it up a notch. Drawing designs on the eyelid, particularly along the perimeter, accentuates your eye shape and can even elongate it. We’re loving the strokes of white, but you really could implement this with any color that tickles your fancy.

The star of the show: bold lips. We simply would not be doing our due diligence if we didn’t include the bold lips trend. It feels like a fall tradition at this point – deep hues of brown, red, and purple are the classics for the chillier season. This year, we’re seeing bold lips paired with more natural eye looks to draw the focus in. Whereas in other seasons, we might suggest that your desert island product be mascara or brow gel, we’re going to point you in the direction of lipstick 100% of the time in the fall.

Grab a hot drink, bundle up in a blanket, and pop on your YouTube fireplace (or your real one, if you’re lucky). Doing your makeup is an ~experience~ and it needs to be as cozy as possible now. We can’t wait for the next few months to be filled with autumnal shades and smoky eyes galore.
