Alright, ladies. Raise your hand if you (or your lipstick) have been personally victimized by your mask. Now that masks are an essential part of public outings, it’s almost impossible to wear lipstick without it smudging everywhere. Unless you’re a fan of lipstick all over your chin, you probably feel like it’s easier to just forgo lipstick all together. If you’re mourning this loss like so many women are, we’ve got good news for you: the natural lip look is coming back full force!

Lately we’ve seen tons of women reverting to more natural-looking lips, but that doesn’t necessarily mean going bare. Here are our new favorite ways of dressing up your lips for the perfect, non-smudgeable look:

Put your lipstick aside all together and try lip liner only. What genius has been hiding this secret from us all this time?? We were today years old when we found out that lip liner can have just as stunning an effect as lipstick itself, and it’s not as prone to smudging. Start with a lip liner that is close to (or slightly darker than) your natural lip shade. Line your lips as desired, whether that’s an exact line or a slight over-line. From there, bring the lip liner in just a bit, and then blend it over the rest of your lips with your finger. This will create the illusion of fuller lips, without the hassle of lipstick. Your look will remain completely natural, but your lips will be poppin’.

Opt for a colored gloss or lip balm. If you’re not sold on the lip liner but you still want to add some color to your lips, using a tinted lip gloss or lip balm is definitely the strategy for you. You can find products that are moisturizing and gloss-ifying (aka, that naturally juicy look we all love) that add just the slightest bit of color at the same time. This option is also less likely to smudge in your mask than lipstick is, and it can easily be re-applied in the bathroom or when you’ve taken a seat at your table and can de-mask safely. Glossier’s Balm Dotcom is an amazing tinted lip balm that provides intense moisture and a beautiful natural tint, so you get the best of both worlds. The Burt’s Bees Natural Tinted Lip Balm is also a cult favorite, made with coconut oil and shea butter so it’s super hydrating. If you’re more of a gloss person, Allure named this Maybelline Lifter Gloss one of the top glosses of 2020!

Forgo the daily hassle all together and choose a semi-permanent option. It wouldn’t be one of our articles if we didn’t give you a choice that eliminates your daily routine in lieu of something that lasts long term. Lip blush is a natural and semi-permanent option (think microblading, but for your lips!) that makes your lips appear plumper without injections. Lip blush enhances the color, shape and fullness of your lips and looks completely natural. Like microblading, lip blushing uses tiny needles to deposit pigment along your lips resulting in a fuller, more tinted look. The staying time of this procedure varies from person to person, but can last up to 3-5 years! Imagine all the time and money you’ll save! Much of this year has been spent adapting to new ways of living, dressing, working, and expressing ourselves. Makeup is a part of that expression, so it can be hard when you have to cover it up. Not all is lost though – getting creative and finding ways to tweak your normal makeup routine so that  it works for our new way of life can be exciting! We love this trend of natural-looking lips, and think it might just be around for the long haul!
